Hiking the Alps

After exploring Salzburg, we headed to the Alps to hike for a few days. What an incredible time we had in the mountains as they proved to be the most beautiful landscapes we’ve ever encountered.

Our hiking began in Innsbruck, only a few hours from Salzburg. Upon our arrival by train, we booked into our hotel only to find we had a few minutes before the room was ready. We were encouraged to try some milk at the farm down the street. No kidding. Within a few minutes from the hotel, right in the middle of the town, was the most gorgeous dairy farm and for one euro you could get yourself  a litre of milk directly from the stainless steel silo located outside the farm. No euro. No problem. You could get half litre for .50 cents. I’ve never tasted such milk in my life. Creamy and delicious - pretty sure it wasn’t pasteurized!

The next morning, we took the public bus from the centre of town to the Hungerberg Station located above the city to begin our “easy” hike. It ended up being a very steep climb - but still doable - and worth it as we’d be having lunch at Umbrüggler Alm, a cafe overlooking Innsbruck. Unfortunately the cafe was closed, but we did get some amazing photos at the top.

Still hungry, we traversed the mountain for another hour to eat at the Arzler Alm which served up an incredible meal. It was here that we learned there was no downhill skiing on this side of Innsbruck, the Nordkette, as the area is prone to Avalanches come winter.

The next day, we took another train to the small country of Liechtenstein, located right next to Austria, to continue our hiking excursion. It’s a bit of a trek, but one train and a few buses later, we ended up in Triesenberg. Triesenberg is incredibly charming and overlooks the Rhine Valley. We chose to book our Airbnb in Triesenburg to take advantage of the hiking nearby. The road up was a little bit scary with its hairpin curves, but once at our Airbnb, all was good.

After a night’s rest, we took the 52 bus right to the top of the mountain - a steep road with more hairpin turns. We started our hike from the Gaflei - the first health and convalescent hotel in Liechtenstein. Although the hotel no longer exists, it still has impressive views of the Triesenberg municipality. From there, we ventured through pine forests and green pastures, home to donkeys, cows and horses, to the summit sitting at 1943 meters. It’s at the top where we stood looking out to the vast valley below and gave thanks for our health as it truly is the foundation for all of our adventures.

Hiking the green pastures

I think the Alps is one of our top travel destinations. Not only because of the outdoor adventures it has to offer, but the people’s lifestyle. Although not easy, it seems simple and bang on - they know what’s important and don't get bogged down with the crazy in the world today.
