The Cotswolds

With Amsterdam under our belts, we hopped on the train and headed to Brussels where we crossed the channel to the UK. It was a very long travel day as we continued past London to the small city of Bath to start our UK journey.

We were in Bath for two full days and it rained for most of it. We managed to get a tour of the whole city on a Hop On/Off bus, which we would recommend. In hindsight, if I were on a proper English holiday, I’d spend another day in Bath to visit a Thermal Bath and The Jane Austin Centre.

Pulteney Bridge

Instead, we booked a tour to see the obligatory Stonehenge, only an hour’s train ride from Bath. We recommend booking a tour to avoid the carpark and the bumper to bumper traffic on the highway. Once at the Visitor’s Centre, you can take a shuttle to the stones but a local in Bath recommended walking the path to get the awe-inspiring effect of the rocks coming into view. And he was right. It truly was spectacular. Once there, I laid on the grass for a few minutes hoping the energy would heal my back. Wishful thinking. Maybe I needed more time.

Stonehenge

After our time in Bath, we took a train to Moreton-in Marsh where we would spend a few precious days exploring the famous and very expensive Cotswolds. After arriving in Morton-in Marsh, we hiked right from the trailhead in town. It was a lovely, easy hike through fields, albeit muddy ones, to the Batsford Arboretum and Cotswold Falconry Centre where we watched a demonstration and walked around the aviaries.

Moreton-in-Marsh, Cotswolds

After a fantastic breakfast at Martha’s Coffee House (and our Airbnb - quaint room upstairs), we took the public bus from Moreton-in Marsh to Chipping Campdem, another Cotswold’s gem, to hike the famous Cotswolds Way. The Cotswalds Way is a 174 km hiking trail from Chipping Camden in the North to the southern endpoint of Bath. We hiked the 9.7 stretch from Chipping Camden to Broadway taking in the Broadway Tower. Both villages and those in between are truly quintessential - right out of a fairytale, including those famous thatched roof houses.

If you’re ever going to the UK, and you’ve got lots of money, we do encourage you to spend a few days in the Cotswolds - lots of sheep and hiking through quaint villages. Find more on our travels here: UK

Cheers everyone!
